Meeting Minutes: October 10, 2019

Open meeting was held at:

Bethlehem Lutheran Church
101 E 38th Street, Tacoma, WA 98404
6:30 – 7:30 PM

An agenda was provided. All board members and over 60 members were present.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm.

Bethlehem Lutheran will continue to let us hold our meetings at their Church! Bless Them!

  • Please consider donating items to help them with their baby box project. They need (gender neutral) items. Diapers (size 1), pacifiers (newborn), baby hygiene items (comb, brush, aspirator and clippers), baby shampoo and baby wash, small toys, sleepers / gowns (3-6 months), sleep sack (3-6 months), receiving blankets, hooded towels, bibs and booties. All items will be packaged in a box that can be used as a bassinet. You can also donate beads, money or buy jewelry to help support the cause.

We started with a prayer for Bethlehem Church and all of the STLC volunteers.

Archbishop Etienne’s response to our appeal

  • Archbishop Etienne responded to our appeal which was due back to us on October 9th. His letter was read at the meeting. He is asking for more time to respond.
  • This is good news! He is considering our appeal and this gives us more time to fund raise.
  • We would like to propose an agreement like the Boston Globe article. We would be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the church. We would like to ask for an agreement that would be spelled out in a legal document (lease, donations collected, what would be expected from the AD and from us, etc.).
  • We intend for parishioners to be in their church forever.
  • The Archdiocese of Seattle said we do not have the resources for maintenance and upkeep. We have to prove to them that we do have the funds and are capable.
  • We need approximately 2 million to reoccupy the church and 18 million (according to the Archdiocese of Seattle) to fix the church completely.
  • Once we are able to get into the church we can have other assessments done and/or just get the problems fixed. If you know of any contacts that would be interested assisting with a new assessment, please send an email. The City of Tacoma will do a thorough and independent assessment before they allow the church be demolished.
  • All types of pledges are welcome, even just pledging 200 hours of general labor at $20.00 per hour. Fill out a pledge form for your time and project and estimate a $$$ amount. It is very important that you do estimate a dollar figure so we have a value to apply to fundraising success. An example would be to clean up the construction site every day for two hours. 180 days times 2 hour at minimum wage of $15.00 per hour is: 360 x $15 = $5,400.00. If you are unsure what the proper wage level should be, get an estimate from a personnel firm who charges for the same service.
  • One architectural and engineering company pledged $27,000.00 in services. Another business pledged $6,500 in trucking fee costs. A different firm $50,000 pledge in professional painting.

  1. Just discovered video of lst meeting – was well done- grateful for support of our mayor, Tacoma and Historical support citizens.
-Curious if second meeting was also recorded and if so, how can I find it to watch. ?

Tonight, I watched, August meeting recording as well as a PBS discussion about Holy Rosary I discovered. All so informative.

I am a little slow getting into support for saving Holy Rosary, but have been following what is happening. Although I can not do as much as my heart wants to do, I will be very vocal and help spread the word. I already am planning to reserve a table for the auction. I have several items for auction I believe will help bring funds. I have on calendar already the January Auction, and August music festival . I will help spread the word about plans, and fundraisers via self, Facebook and emails.

I am eldest daughter of Leonard and Margaret Marcoe who were long time members of Holy Rosary until they both passed. both were buried from Holy Rosary. My grandparents were Leonard and Ada Marcoe and members as well until their deaths. I have numerous Forbes, and Marcoe cousins as well as distant cousins and friends who maintained church membership. I think all 6 of my siblings attended Holy Rosary once we returned from 8 year stay in Longview Wa. where I attended 2nd- 8th grade school. Sadly, younger generations now move away and the older ones are passing. But we seem to always find our way back home, especially when such an important cause is calling us. I am also close to cousins, Jim and Sharon Lawless, so have heard about the meetings and dinners which I had to miss.

I will be 79 in January but remain active in my community and still like to support important causes though not as active as I used to be, but I find extra ways to support and talk up important causes.
